Thank you for having been part of our Global Hour of Prayer E-service last Monday, and here is what Pr. Benny shared with us.
What I want to talk to you now is very important to my life and I want to really get your attention on what I believe we as God’s people need to do right now. I will give you the headline: it’s time we begin living for the next life in this life; it’s time we begin to live for eternity today, not when we wait to see the Lord.
Three years ago, the Lord said to me very clearly to stop watching television and I have not watched one network in those three years. The Lord said to me, begin to disconnect from this life, from this world and naturally I don’t know what is going on. I am not blind of the things happening around me. But when I began to do this, the peace and the joy that over flow my heart I cannot describe it.
We cannot allow the world anymore to influence our thinking. And then I began to read the word of God three times a year, from Genesis to Revelation and the change that has happened to me I cannot even talk about it.
I read Christian materials by the great authors who have gone to heaven, the great fathers of the church, the great reformers like Martin Luther and Foxe because I want the depth they walked into, and I have been telling the pastors that we have to do exactly what Abraham did, and its mentioned in Hebrews 11:10; “For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”
He chose to be a stranger in the land of promise, and the bible says, he could have gone back to Haran where he came from but he chose to live in a tent and see himself as a stranger on the earth because he saw his citizenship not on earth, his citizenship was in heaven. It’s time we begin to change our thinking on our citizenship on earth, our citizenship is in heaven.
For example, you’re not a citizen of Uganda. Your true citizenship is heavenly, though your body needs identification, citizenship and so forth. We can travel using passports but our real citizenship is not earthly, and if our citizenship is not earthy, why are we more involved in earthly matters? So our heavenly life must begin to control and affect our lifestyle on earth; our lifestyle and citizenship must come together.
I walked in a room not long ago and there was a lady watching a secure program, I said, why are you watching this? She said I liked it. I said, what does this do for your walk with God? What is this doing to your spiritual life? She was very upset with me for asking such a question. I said, what does this do for your spiritual relationship with the Lord?
She became convicted and later switched it off though not that she wanted to. I have told my children and my wife Suzanne that we must begin to live the next life now as though we are already there. We must immerse ourselves in the scriptures to begin to know the mind of God.
You know there’s something so troubling in America and that is the problem with mental health. People are on medication for mental illnesses because of addictive drug consumption, and this has become a major problem in the United States. The rate of suicide among our young people has gone sky high.
Social media is killing our young people because they cannot compete with the popularity of their friends on Facebook, Instagram and other platforms which we can use for the Lord. Because they cannot handle the competition, they end up committing suicide.
The solution to mental illness is what Hebrews 12 verse 1 – 3 talks about; verse 1 reads, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”
The key is looking unto Jesus, here is the real foundation of health, beauty and glory; verse 2 reads, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
How can you look unto Jesus if you are so connected to earthly matters? It’s time we stop looking at earthly matters and look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith; to acknowledge His presence daily, when we wake up in the morning, when we do our work at home and when we are doing work at our workplaces.
You must acknowledge Jesus in everything you do and in every decision you make. Look at what the scripture has said, “who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God,” and here is what verse 3 says, “For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.”
Why are people fainting in their minds? Why are they losing their minds? Because there are three problems; the sin in their life [in verse 1] which they have not yet laid away; they are not looking unto Jesus.
The way the Lord did it, the bible says, “for the joy that was set before him”; he saw the church, he saw the victories of Calvary and we see that in Psalms 22, he saw the joy of Calvary and the glories of the cross. For the joy that was set before him, he endured the cross despising the shame.
Imagine despising the shame and not paying attention to the pain in his body; he disconnected from the pain and the shame; consider him, lest ye faint in your minds.
